A Long History
A Long History
In distant times an ‘Athenaeum’ was a place of literary or scientific study. Today, our Club’s focus remains literature, art, music and learning.
Our members are from many fields of endeavour that include business, primary production, engineering, architecture, the law, the arts, politics, public service, the military and the diplomatic corps.
True to its founding principles, the Club continues to offer warm fellowship and remains deeply engaged in supporting learning, with discussion across multiple interest groups. These range from current affairs, multiple sporting codes, travel, wine, literature, sustainability and faith. The Club also strongly supports both visual arts and music.
Members and their family and guests enjoy the social connection and cultural richness that the Atheneum Club of Melbourne provides.
Our Focus
Our Focus
All Club activities focus on member engagement, enjoyment and an exchange of knowledge. Our purpose-built clubhouse provides the facilities and amenity that promote restoration of the mind and body, that links strongly to our rich heritage. We are committed to honouring our history and to preserving the values and character of our Club for the enjoyment and benefit, not just of members, but future generations.
Dining
Dining
Dining at the Athenaeum Club is about much more than superb food and fine wine - although the quality of fare and wine offered easily matches the adjacent fine dining restaurants. Breakfast and dinner are both served in our third floor Athena Room, a private sanctuary above the activity of Collins Street. Lunches in the grand Members Dining Room move beyond the memorable culinary experience, as the room abounds with an extraordinary and rare collection of modern art.
Relaxing
Relaxing
As members relax in the quiet comfort of the Drawing Room, it’s hard to believe they are located in the centre of Melbourne’s premium shopping and business district. Enjoy a coffee, read a newspaper or magazine, or simply sit back and, in winter, bask in the warmth of the crackling fireplaces. Our Drawing Room is a tranquil haven in the heart of a busy city.
Private Rooms
Private Rooms

Best of all, every detail is cared for - cuisine, wine, service staff - all focused on creating unforgettable memories. Our Executive Chef will prepare the perfect menu, whilst our Sommeliers are also on hand to suggest the ideal wine choices.

Theme Tables
Theme tables and special interest groups are a highlight of the Club. There is an extensive program of vibrant events, activities, special interest lunches and sporting competitions.
Theme tables are a unique feature of the Athenaeum Club, providing like-minded members with the opportunity to meet on a regular basis, and over lunch hear highly qualified speakers. There are currently over 35 theme tables and special interest groups. Competitions are held with other clubs in Melbourne in sports such as sailing, golf, backgammon and billiards.
The Foundation
The Foundation
The Athenaeum Club Foundation actively supports emerging talent in visual arts, music and literature. The Foundation provides musical instruments on loan to the Victorian Secondary College of the Arts and provides financial support to the students who are custodians of these instruments. The Foundation also selects worthy charities that support the disadvantaged in our community. Currently our chosen charity is FareShare, which provides over 10,000 nutritious meals a day to those struggling financially.

Membership
The Athenaeum Club is one of Australia’s oldest and finest private social clubs, confident in its heritage and traditions yet enlightened and contemporary in its outlook. For gentlemen of good character, it upholds the core principles of courtesy and consideration for others, formality, impeccable values and behaviour, together with total respect for fellow members’ privacy. Its members are drawn from the fields of science, business, literature, the arts, the learned professions, and the public service.
Membership is multi-generational, multi-cultural, multi-sector and multi-interest, large enough for a rich diversity, yet small enough for members to be able to know a good cross-section of other members.
The benefits of membership and the facilities on offer to members are extensive. Partners, family and friends of members are very welcome to participate in a wide range of Club activities.
Membership is via nomination by an existing member, and a member-based support team is required to submit an application. For more information on this process, contact the Club's Membership Manager via
